If you're planning to study, work, or move abroad, you'll likely need to prove your English level. Two of the most popular exams are IELTS (Academic and General) and the Cambridge exams (like FCE or CAE). But which one is right for you? Here’s a quick guide to help you decide.
🔍 What’s the Difference?

IELTS is available in Academic and General Training versions and is used for university, work, or immigration.
Cambridge exams (like B2 First or C1 Advanced) assess your English level and don’t expire.
Both are widely recognised by schools, employers, and governments.
🧪 Exam Formats

IELTS:
Listening: 30 mins
Reading: 60 mins
Writing: 60 mins
Speaking: 11–14 mins (face-to-face)
Cambridge (e.g. FCE/CAE):
Reading & Use of English: 90 mins
Writing: 80 mins
Listening: 40 mins
Speaking: 15 mins (usually with a partner)
📊 Scoring Systems

IELTS: Scores from 0–9 (e.g. 6 = “competent”, 8 = “very good”)
Cambridge: Aligned to A1–C2 levels (e.g. B2 or C1 on the CEFR scale)
We use lots of acronyms and words like A1 or B2 and I understand this can sound confusing. If you are unclear, book a call with me (Tom) and I will be happy to explain this in more detail.
🌍 Recognition & Use

IELTS is better for immigration (e.g. Canada, Australia, UK)
Cambridge exams are great for academic and long-term use (no expiry)
✅ Pros & Cons

IELTS:
Flexible test dates
Fast results
Widely accepted.
Results valid for 2 years.
Cambridge Exams:
Detailed language evaluation
Results don’t expire.
🧭 Which Should You Choose?

Choose IELTS if: You’re applying for a visa, studying abroad soon, or need fast results.
Choose Cambridge if: You want a deeper language assessment and plan to use the results long-term.
🎯 Final Tip
Think about your goals and timeline. Both exams are excellent, but the right one depends on where and why you’ll use your score.
